Citizen Eco-Drive is one of the most practical ideas in modern watchmaking: a watch with quartz accuracy that runs on light and never needs a routine battery change.
Citizen says Eco-Drive works with any kind of light, from bright sunshine to dim indoor lighting, and that most models keep running for more than six months on a full charge. This guide explains how Eco-Drive works, how it developed, how to care for it, and which Citizen Eco-Drive watch on TGT Luxe suits different needs and budgets.
Sunshine, desk lamps or dim indoor lighting
Runs on a full charge on most models
No routine battery change needed
The Basics
What Is Citizen Eco-Drive?
Eco-Drive is Citizen's proprietary light-powered technology for analogue quartz watches. A solar cell converts light into electrical energy, which is stored inside the watch and used to power a quartz movement. Because it charges from any light source, normal daily wear indoors and outdoors usually keeps an Eco-Drive watch running.
The Technology
How Does Eco-Drive Work?
Light ArrivesLight reaches the solar cell. On most models the cell sits under the dial, which is made to let light pass through.
ConvertedThe cell converts light into electricity.
StoredThe energy is stored so the watch can run when there is no light.
Powers QuartzA quartz movement uses that energy to keep accurate time.
Heritage
A Short History of Eco-Drive
Citizen released the world's first light-powered analogue watch, the Crystron Solar Cell.
The Eco-Drive Eclipse introduced a ring-shaped solar cell at the edge of the dial, allowing metal dials that do not let light through.
The Eco-Drive One used a movement about 1mm thick.
Citizen marks 50 years of light-powered watches with anniversary editions.
On TGT Luxe you can see this anniversary in the Citizen Eco-Drive Photon 50th Anniversary limited editions.

How to Care for an Eco-Drive Watch
Citizen recommends around five or six hours of direct sunlight a month for best results, and ordinary indoor light also charges it.
Do not store it in darkness for long periods. Keep it where it receives some light.
If the seconds hand jumps in two-second steps, put the watch in the light.
Never operate the crown or pushers underwater.
Have the seals and water resistance checked periodically. Our Watch Care Center services Citizen watches with genuine parts. For more, read our watch care guide.
