Your first luxury watch is often bought to mark something important: a promotion, a wedding, a business milestone or simply years of hard work. The right one will be worn and enjoyed for decades. The wrong one can end up in a drawer.
Because it is a significant purchase, it pays to understand what you are buying. This guide covers the ten things we suggest every first-time luxury buyer in India understands before spending, with examples from Swiss brands available on TGT Luxe, including Tissot, Longines, Rado and TAG Heuer.

Point 1
Decide What "Luxury" Means to You
Luxury can mean different things: Swiss heritage, a mechanical movement you can see through the case back, an unusual material such as high-tech ceramic, or simply a famous name on the dial.
Before you shop, decide which matters most. A buyer who loves engineering may be happiest with a chronometer-certified automatic; a buyer who wants a watch that looks new for years may prefer ceramic. Knowing your priority narrows the choice quickly.
Point 2
Set a Budget That Includes Ownership Costs
Luxury watches on TGT Luxe range widely. Tissot offers Swiss watches at accessible prices, while Longines, Rado and TAG Heuer sit higher, with many models in the ₹4 lakh to ₹9 lakh range. Explore by price in our ₹1 lakh to ₹2 lakh and ₹2 lakh and above collections.
Point 3
Understand What "Swiss Made" and Heritage Bring
Switzerland is the traditional home of fine watchmaking, and many luxury brands have long histories. Tissot, for example, was founded in 1853 in Le Locle and is part of the Swatch Group. Heritage brings recognised design, established service networks and strong brand value.
It is not the only route to quality; Japanese brands such as Seiko make highly regarded watches such as the Seiko Presage and Astron ranges. But for many first-time luxury buyers in India, a Swiss watch is the goal.
| Brand | Known For | On TGT Luxe |
|---|---|---|
| Tissot | Swiss watches at accessible prices; PRX, Ballade, Le Locle | Tissot collection |
| Longines | Classic, elegant Swiss watches with long power reserves | Longines collection |
| Rado | High-tech ceramic cases and bracelets | Rado collection |
| TAG Heuer | Sports and motor-racing inspired chronographs | TAG Heuer collection |
Point 4
Learn the Basics of Movements
Most luxury watches use automatic (self-winding mechanical) movements, though luxury quartz watches exist too. A few terms are worth knowing:
The movement's reference, such as the Longines L896.5 or Rado R734.
How long the watch runs once taken off. The Longines Conquest Heritage Power Reserve lists up to 72 hours.
A movement tested by the official Swiss chronometer testing institute. Certified mechanical movements must keep an average daily rate within −4 to +6 seconds. The Tissot Ballade T1564081109300 is COSC-certified.
Lets you see the movement, as on the Rado Captain Cook R32128162.

Point 5
Choose Materials That Suit Your Lifestyle
Versatile and durable; the classic first luxury choice.
Rado's signature material. Very scratch-resistant and keeps its colour, but can chip if dropped on a hard floor.
Develops a natural patina over time, so each watch ages differently. The TAG Heuer WBE5190.FC8268 has a fine-brushed bronze case.
Standard on most luxury watches, and far more scratch-resistant than mineral glass.
Point 6
Get the Size and Comfort Right
Luxury watches are worn for years, so comfort matters. Check case diameter, thickness and lug-to-lug length. Many first luxury watches are between 38mm and 42mm for men; the Tissot Ballade is 39mm and the Longines Conquest Heritage is 38mm, while sports models such as the Rado Captain Cook are larger at 43mm. Women's luxury watches are often 28–36mm.
The best test is to try watches on; you can do this at any of our eight boutiques in Gujarat.
Point 7
Compare Warranties
Warranty periods vary by brand, and a longer warranty is a real benefit on an expensive watch. On the product pages we checked:
Longines and Rado
Seiko and Citizen
Tissot and TAG Heuer
Always confirm the warranty on the product page and make sure the card is stamped and dated at purchase.
Point 8
Buy Only From an Authorised Retailer
This is the most important rule. Buying from an authorised retailer protects you from counterfeits and ensures the brand warranty is valid. Watches sold through unofficial channels may be cheaper, but they can come without a valid warranty, with incorrect papers, or worse.
- Get a stamped, dated warranty card and a proper GST invoice.
- Check that the serial or reference numbers match the papers and box.
- Keep the box, papers, manual and tags safely; they matter for service and resale.
TGT Luxe is the online store of The Golden Time, a watch retailer since 1928.
Point 9
Check for After-Sales Service
A luxury mechanical watch will need servicing during its life, and that service should use genuine parts. Our Watch Care Center offers full movement overhauls, water resistance testing and polishing, using spare parts sourced only from brand-authorised supply. Ask about service before you buy, so you know where your watch will be looked after.
Point 10
Buy What You Love, Not Only for Value
Some watches hold their value well; many do not. Treat your first luxury watch as something to wear and enjoy rather than as an investment. If you love a watch, you will wear it, and that is what makes it worth the money.
If you want something rare, look at limited-edition watches, but buy them because they appeal to you.
